Also known as Punica granatum , Pomegranate plant is known for its rush colored spherical fruits, stunning crimson blossoms which flower for months. Pomegranate plant is cultivated around the globe as an ornamental shrub or fruit tree. It can be planted in large pots and gardens in warm sunny conditions or in a green house.

Pomegranate is a deciduous fruits tree grown world wide although it has variants which stay green in mild winter conditions hence termed evergreen.

Pomegranate in gardens and indoors

Pomegranates are planted as hedging plants in landscaping and will define property boundaries ,provide privacy and shelter from winds.

If used as hedging plants they offer an advantage, incase of a missed pruning they respond well to renovation.

Pomegranates are also suited for growing indoors because of their shallow root system ( root system good for container growing).

If planted indoors pruning is mandatory in order to ensure desired growth and shape is achieved.

Fertilizer requirements

Fertilizers should be applied in march and November for the first 2 years. Do not over fertilize and there is no need to fertilize in the subsequent years as this results in reduced yields.

Irrigation requirements

The pomegranate tree is drought tolerant, though irrigation is needed for proper fruit production. Water deeply every two to four weeks during the dry season.

Do not over water, excess water and soggy conditions can lead to a poor harvest.

The fruit will also be more prone to splitting, increasing the chances of problems with pests and fungal diseases.
